Severfield's Hill Dickinson Stadium steelwork named constructsteel Best Project of the Year
The 12,200-tonne steel package for Everton's new stadium has taken a second industry award in six weeks, after the World Steel Association programme announced its 2026 winners on 26 October.
Severfield plc's structural steelwork for Hill Dickinson Stadium, Everton Football Club's 52,888-capacity ground at Bramley Moore Dock, has been named Best Project of the Year at the 2026 constructsteel Awards, the British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA) said.
The winners were announced on 26 October, according to BCSA, which represents the UK structural steel sector and counts Severfield among its members. The awards cover three categories: Best Project of the Year, Innovation of the Year and Excellence in Sustainability.
constructsteel is the steel construction market development programme of the World Steel Association, BCSA said, bringing together global steel producers and stakeholders.
The result follows an Award for the same stadium at the 58th Structural Steel Design Awards (SSDA), jointly sponsored by BCSA and Steel for Life, announced on the evening of 17 September at Landing Forty Two. The SSDA judges said: "The steel has been very carefully designed and detailed, and its installation painstakingly planned" to maximise efficient use of temporary works.
BCSA said the constructsteel result was a further demonstration that UK constructional steelwork fabricators are among the best in the world and recognised as such by their peers.
The steel package
Severfield designed the steel-to-steel connections and supplied and erected 12,200 tonnes of structural steelwork for the stadium, according to its project page. Of that, 1,500 tonnes was recycled steel.
The north and south roofs are carried on five long-span trusses, two to the north and three to the south, Severfield said. Each truss is 170 metres long and weighs 200 tonnes.
For erection, each truss was split into three sections of typically 60 to 70 metres. Severfield said each section was supported on temporary trestle towers spanning between the structural bearings while it was installed.
The site itself presented its own constraint. Severfield said the former dock had to be filled with layers of sand to safeguard its listed retaining walls before construction.
Severfield said the project achieved every programme target and milestone set.
The project team
The SSDA entry listed BDP Pattern as architect, Buro Happold as structural engineer, Severfield as steelwork contractor, Laing O'Rourke as main contractor and Everton FC 'The People's Project' as client.
The SSDA judges said the low-profile barrel form of the roof encloses a stadium with unusually high sustainability credentials.
Laing O'Rourke said the stadium would be the catalyst for the regeneration of North Liverpool. Paul McNerney, Director of UK Building at Laing O'Rourke, said: "As a local employer, and as a contractor that's rooted in the local environment, this is a huge project for us."
The venue took its current name under a naming-rights agreement announced by Everton on 16 May 2025, which made commercial law firm Hill Dickinson the club's official naming rights partner. Everton said Hill Dickinson was founded in 1810 and has 11 offices across the UK, Europe and Asia.
Severfield
Severfield describes itself as the largest specialist structural steelwork group in the UK. According to the company, it operates five manufacturing facilities in the UK, one in Europe and a joint venture in India, with annual capacity to produce about 300,000 tonnes of fabricated steelwork.
Professor Roger Plank, Chairman of the Judges Panel for the SSDA, said the awards were "a fantastic platform for the industry to showcase excellence and diversity in the use of structural steel".
The constructsteel win is the second award for the stadium's steelwork in just under six weeks, following the SSDA result on 17 September.
On the record: Buro Happold
