Jack Aluminium SD70 heritage door passes PAS 24 with FUHR multisafe 856 lock

Carl F Groupco and FUHR worked with the Coventry systems house to fit a 65mm backset multipoint lock behind the SD70's floating mullion, using 3D printed prototype keeps before testing.

Jack Aluminium's new SD70 heritage door system has passed a PAS 24 security test using a FUHR multisafe 856 multipoint lock, developed with hardware distributor Carl F Groupco and the lock's German manufacturer, the Council for Aluminium in Building (CAB) reported.

Carl F Groupco said it worked with Jack Aluminium's technical team and FUHR to provide a multipoint locking solution tailored to the system. The distributor described itself as the leading UK distributor of FUHR hardware, supporting fabricators, installers and system houses.

The lock at the centre of the project is FUHR's lever-operated multisafe 856, which the announcement described as having four mushroom rollers with hardened steel cams. Its lever operation allows either standard or heritage-style lever handles, and the lock has serrations to allow shootbolt extensions for taller doors or added security.

Matt Brown, regional sales manager at Carl F Groupco, said: "This project is an example of how early involvement can help move development forward, particularly when a door system has specific design requirements."

Working behind the mullion

Because of the SD70's design, the locking solution had to work behind the floating mullion. Carl F Groupco said early prototyping was used to confirm fit, operation and suitability before the project moved to final sampling and testing.

Brown worked with Paul Balfe, business development manager at FUHR, to develop prototype keeps and underplates using 3D printed parts. FUHR supplied the gearing, product samples, fit-and-function support and 3D modelling files so the hardware could be demonstrated within the system.

Both companies attended the PAS 24 testing, with Brown and Balfe on site alongside the Jack Aluminium team.

Balfe said: "Heritage-style aluminium systems often present specific design challenges, so being able to prototype, model the fit-ups and provide technical input from the outset helped move the project forward quickly and confidently."

Terry Hirons at Jack Aluminium said the technical input during development meant the project was delivered to schedule and met performance requirements.

The lock

The SD70 uses a 65mm backset version of the multisafe 856. FUHR's product page lists backsets for the lock from 25mm to 65mm, making the SD70's backset the largest in the published range.

FUHR markets the multisafe 856 for side and back entrance doors. On the lock, the door can be opened from inside and outside until the main deadbolt is extended with the key, and the manufacturer says it can achieve burglar resistance up to RC3 in suitable door systems.

The systems house

Jack Aluminium describes itself as an independent, privately owned UK aluminium systems house with more than 19 years supporting the UK aluminium glazing industry. It says its systems are independently tested to PAS 24, Secured by Design and STS 202 BR2.

The company's heritage doors are typically configured on the SD70 system, which it says offers slim sightlines and glazing bar options to replicate steel-look designs.

Jack Aluminium is based at Torrington Avenue in Coventry. In July 2023 it moved to a new site on the outskirts of the city, more than doubling its premises by adding 17,000 sq ft of factory space to reach a total of 28,000 sq ft.
